here's our background (from what we can remember)
various OSs but 3.1 & xp were the favorites
no gaming, all creative audio/video/imaging
early overclocked PII was able to do it all 
 before the internet got heavy on flash
small clean xp install on a 4+ year old VIA
 PIII machine, also kindly donated by dear
 friend b13nx2k. never fried on modified
 stock cooling; even when overclocked.
 no viruses; even with heavy p2p & scarry websites.
 only stuttered on big streaming video, mkv or DVD
